Vicodin Lawsuit Vicodin Side Effects Lawsuit AttorneyIn January 2011, the government announced its intention to limit use of some of the most popular prescription painkillers, including Vicodin. It cited reports of poisoning caused by many patients due to acetaminophen presence in these drugs. The FDA has granted three years to manufacturers of these narcotics drugs with acetaminophen to reformulate them. It has set a new limit of 325 milligrams of acetaminophen in Vicodin-like drugs, less than half of the amount presently allowed. Apart from these, manufacturers and distributors are required to have more explicit warning labels on these drugs.

Vicodin, which contains hydrocodone and paracetamol or acetaminophen mixture, is used to treat moderate to severe pain and cough. Doctors usually prescribe the drug for acute, chronic, or post-operative pains. Vicodin is effective in increasing the patient’s ability to deal with pain and speeds up the recovery process. However, it is listed under the U.S. Controlled Substances Act of 1970 for having hydrocodone, a semi-synthetic opioid analgesic. It has many side effects, including addiction blues.

Due to its widespread side effects, the U.S. laws control production, sale, and usage of Vicodin. Though doctors prescribe only controlled dosage to patients, users often experience dizziness, lightheadedness, vomiting, and sedation. The strength of the drug often induces many patients to become addicted to it. When abused, the drug is likely to influence physical and mental conditions of addicts.

Reports on Vicodin Side Effects

The FDA has named Vicodin a Schedule III drug with the warning that its misuse has the potential to cause

moderate physical and high psychological dependence. An independent study carried out in 2005 reported that poisoning is most likely to occur in people using Vicodin and other products having narcotic substance with acetaminophen. It also highlighted the fact that more than 400 patients die and 40,000 seek treatment every year in the country for side effects of drugs, such as Vicodin. In June 2009, a federal advisory committee recommended for ban on the drug because of its misuse and effects on the liver. It cited harmful effects of the drug on individual and public health in the country.

A research report published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in December 2010 warned against use of narcotic painkillers by older patients. The study sponsored by the Federal Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research focused on comparative safety risks posed by painkillers for the elderly. According to it, elder patients having arthritis face possible risk of heart attack, bone fracture, and death caused by narcotic painkillers. Two researchers at Yale University Medical School also found that gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers in older patients are linked to use of narcotic painkillers.

Vicodin Addiction

Addiction is the most harmful side effect of Vicodin. The FDA has classified it as a Schedule III drug for its addiction potential. Hydrocodone in Vicodin affects emotional and physical status of a person. The individual becomes addicted to it due to its mood-altering properties. On May 12th, the Miami-Dade police arrested one of its officials for impersonating a doctor and trying to obtain prescriptions for Vicodin for his personal use. The 31-year-old was charged with attempt to acquire controlled substances through fraud. The investigations revealed that the official was a Vicodin addict even before joining the police a decade ago. In another incident, a horrible accident in March this year was blamed on a Vicodin abuser, who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident, which rendered a 16-year-old Californian girl blind. These two incidents point toward the widespread prescription drug abuse in the country.

Vicodin Pregnancy Side Effects

Vicodin has the potential to create both teratogenic and nonteratogenic effects in pregnant women. New Zealand researchers have linked acetaminophen in Vicodin to postnatal asthma problems found in children. Abuse of the drug by expectant mothers may lead to birth of children dependent on the drug. Higher doses of the drug create respiratory depression in newborns.

Vicodin Liver Side Effects Lawsuit Attorney

Overdoses of acetaminophen or paracetamol in Vicodin can cause liver damage in patients. Users are likely to suffer from abdominal pain and outright liver failure.

Vicodin Central Nervous System Side Effects

Due to the analgesic character of the drug, users are prone to drowsiness, lethargy, mental clouding, impaired mental and physical ability, dysphoria, psychic dependence, and abnormal mood changes.

Vicodin Gastrointestinal and Genitourinary Disorders

Using Vicodin over a period of time causes constipation, urinary problems due to ureteral spasm, and pain caused by abnormal functioning of vesical sphincters in users.

Vicodin Respiratory Depression

Hydrocodone creates respiratory depression in users. It acts directly on the brain stem regulating respiratory in our body. Thus users experience abnormal respiratory rhythm and irregular breathing.

Risks for Elderly

Several research and clinical studies have found that Vicodin and such other narcotic painkillers can cause disturbances in hepatic, renal, and cardiac functions. Those with impaired renal function are prone to increased toxic reactions. Confusion and over-sedation are two most visible side effects found in elder Vicodin users.
