Rhode Island Bar Owner; Target of ASCAP Lawsuit

The lawsuit filed by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers alleges that Patricks Pub violated copyright laws when patrons performed several songs without proper license.

The lawsuit seeks up to $120,000 in damages and recovery and could possibly force the pub to shutter its doors. Patrick Griffin, the bar owner named in the lawsuit has claimed that he was unaware of licensing fee requirements as it pertains to the live performance of music in establishment. Mr. Griffin stated that he was under the impression that royalty fees and or any other licensing fees were the sole responsibility of the artist performing the copyrighted works.

The pub serves as a local meeting place for Providence politicians whom make of the majority of the pubs patrons and have since came to Mr. Griffin’s defense.
